Nintendo has released system update 23.0.0 for the Nintendo Switch 2. The headline change is support for VRR (Variable Refresh Rate) when the console is used in TV mode.
What VRR support means for players
When a game and a television both support VRR, the display’s refresh rate can dynamically match the game’s changing frame output. In practice, this reduces visible stutter during frame-rate swings and can produce noticeably smoother motion.
Requirements: TV, game and dock updates
- Both the game and the TV must be VRR-compatible for the feature to work.
- The Nintendo Switch 2 dock must also be updated — system update 23.0.0 includes the necessary dock-side support so the console can use VRR while connected to a compatible television.
How this change arrived
VRR in TV mode had been expected since before the Switch 2’s launch: Nintendo’s official pages originally listed TV-mode VRR but later removed that information and clarified the support was limited to handheld mode, saying the earlier listing had been published incorrectly. Interest in full TV-mode support grew after independent tests showed the official dock could pass VRR when used with other compatible devices. Until today’s update, the Switch 2 itself did not activate VRR when connected to a television.
Other items in update 23.0.0
- GameChat improvements.
- Ability to share Mii characters via QR codes.
